Olga Blokh’s Murpups From Puumala: Journey To Find The Sun ceramic comics art on view at Railway Station’s Art Dock Gallery.
Exhibition of ceramic comics art Murpups From Puumala: Journey To Find The Sun by ceramic artist Olga Blokh is on view at Railway Station’s Art Dock Gallery in Punkaharju, Finland, June 4 – August 31, 2023.
Murpups from Puumala comics art started as paintings in 2017 and is based on true events that happened to the artist and her husband during their adventures in Puumala and beyond. Murpups is coming from Marmot and Bunny (in Finnish, Murmeli and Pupu), and they are the main characters of the series.
”In 2022 I got an idea to combine my paintings and ceramics. And I started to translate Murpups into ceramic art by creating one-act play sculptures, as I call them. The featured Journey To Find The Sun series are new and were created based on the events of our roadtrip around Europe in early 2023. Marmot and Bunny, or my husband and I, spent 4 months traveling mainly in Northern Spain. The road ran through national parks and mountains, valleys and seashores, small villages and cities. We also spent a wonderful time in artist residency in Undermount center, San-Sebastian,” – describes Olga Blokh.
At the exhibition the set of 13 ceramic comics series takes you on a journey with Murpups around beautiful Spain, introduces you to new animal friends and life in the art residency. Furry team Gossos Si! takes you to enjoy life like dogs do.
In Almond Tree Valley Murpups admire almond trees in full bloom and smell the Spring coming over the mountains. In highlands furry friends find out what is going on on the closed serpentine roads.
During working time at Undermount Murpups meet many friends and collaborate with the cat Chicho. Together, friends feed kiwis to the ponies and fresh baguettes to the animals in the yard.
Murpups also learn dogs’ way of enjoying the beach life. ”On the way through Catalonia we noticed lots of ”Gossos no!”, or ”No dogs!”, signs. In the Basque Country it was just the opposite – the beaches were full of dogs chasing the ball at full speed. That’s where the Gossos Si! – furry team comes from,” – tells the artist.
Ceramic works created by Olga Blokh during the residency period in Undermount center are also on view. Art pieces include objects with wood fired Spanish terracotta and hand built and painted stoneware. Artworks are also on display outdoors, including Olga and Jaakko Blokh’s collaborative art object, named Gossos Si!.
